Description
The Oast and Stables at Deanery Farm, dating from around 1500 and altered in the early 19th century, are located in Chartham. The building is constructed of red brick with blue headers and features a clay tiled roof. The northeast front has a base of red brick in English bond with Caen stone quoins, while the upper part was redone in Flemish bond during the early 19th century. It includes three circular window openings, one cambered doorcase with double doors, and one original loop light near the ground floor. There are also one cross-shaped and three circular iron ties. The northwest elevation mirrors the northeast with a gable end and three circular iron ties. The southwest elevation showcases 16th-century diaper brickwork with blue headers in English bond, featuring one 19th-century fixed casement, one casement with a cambered head stable door, and a dovecot. Inside this section, there are three axial beams with run-out stops, a cobbled floor, an early 19th-century roof structure, and a hop press. Attached to the southwest is a section of 16th-century walling, nearly 8 feet high and 24 meters long, also in English bond, which contains one blocked opening with a four-centred arch and Caen stone quoins at the southern end. To the southeast, there is a single-storey stable block addition from around 1900, which is not of special interest. This building is part of the Deanery complex and likely served as part of the Priors Great stable and various lodgings.
