Description

Finches Cottage, Meadow Cottage (No 1), and Beggars Cottage (No 2 and No 3) are a range of cottages located on Railway Hill in Derringstone, dating from around 1750 or earlier. The cottages are constructed of rough cast render and feature a hipped Kentish peg-tiled roof. This L-shaped range is two stories high, with three windows facing Railway Hill and five windows on the side elevation. A brick modillion eaves cornice is present along the roofline.

The elevation facing Railway Hill has 20th-century casement windows. Finches Cottage includes a penticed addition on the left side with a modern plank door. The side elevation displays five early 19th-century metal-framed casements, with rectangular openings on the first floor and segmental-headed openings on the ground floor. The doorways have cambered doorcases, originally four in number, but one for No 2 has been replaced by a window. No 3 features an early 19th-century penticed weather hood, while No 1 has a later 19th-century gabled weather hood.

Additional architectural details include a plinth, a catslide roof at the rear, and a large brick chimneystack at the junction of the L range's end brick chimneystack and an external rough cast stack for Finches Cottage. The rear of Finches Cottage has a hipped roof. Inside, No 1 has a brick open fireplace with a wooden bressumer, No 2 has an open fireplace, and No 3 features a brick open fireplace with an arched recess on the left, rustic elm floor joists, and a winder stair.
