Description

Westbere House is a large, L-shaped house dating to circa 1800. The exterior is painted brick on the ground floor, with the rest of the facade covered in wistaria and other climbing plants. It has a mansard slate roof with three dormers and a parapet, featuring an enriched frieze with swags. The windows are five-light sashes with intact glazing bars; the first-floor windows have Venetian shutters. A doorcase with engaged Ionic columns, an enriched frieze, pediments, an elliptical fanlight, and double doors of six moulded and fielded panels leads to the entrance, which is raised two steps. The east and west fronts are splayed; the west front has two bays, each containing three windows on both the ground and first floors. Inside, the house features 18th-century marble fireplaces and a staircase with two twisted balusters to each tread. The house was once owned by the writer Joseph Conrad.
