Description

The Italian Garden at Broome Park Hotel includes a loggia, attached walls, niches containing statues, a fountain, stone garden ornaments, a statue, and an urn. The garden and its ornaments were likely designed by Lord Kitchener in 1911. The small loggia is constructed of red brick with three round-headed stone archways facing south, approached by four steps. Corinthian stone columns are set between brick pilasters on the exterior. Stone cartouches, brought from elsewhere, are in the spandrels. A stone blocking course features vases at the angles. Yew hedges flank the loggia, connecting to the building via brick structures with pilasters, each housing a round-headed, stone-edged niche containing a statue – one appears antique, the other likely from the 19th century – topped with a broken pediment. The eastern focus of the garden is a stone wall fountain with a terracotta balustrade above, flanked by curved staircases leading to a terrace. The supporting structure behind the fountain is part of the service basement extending from the main house. Other ornaments within the garden include marble columns with swag ornamentation set in yew hedges. A central column displays a bronze statue of Pan by Brucciani. An urn sits on a plinth at the garden’s eastern end, decorated with carved martial and musical trophies, likely dating from the early 20th century.
