Description
Copperhurst is a house that dates from the 16th century or earlier, with cladding added between the 17th century and early 19th century. It features a timber frame clad with red brick in English Bond, ragstone, and both plain and decorative tile hanging, topped by a plain tiled roof. The building has an open courtyard plan, resembling a hall house or a lobby entry house with two rear wings. The main entry is now located in the rear courtyard, accessed through a boarded door set in an arched brick surround.
The roadside elevation consists of two storeys and a basement, built on a plinth and divided into two sections. The left section has tile hanging over brick, while the right section is clad in ragstone. The left side projects slightly, and the end bay of the main range also extends out. The roof is hipped, featuring an oversailing gablet on the left and chimney stacks at the left end and centre right. On the first floor, there are three leaded wooden casements, while the ground floor has two tripartite glazing bar sashes and a central single glazing bar sash. There is a basement opening on the right return. The main timber-framed range is now on the left return, also two storeys high with a hipped roof and gablets, displaying irregular wooden casement windows, along with a catslide outshot at the rear.
Historically, Copperhurst is noted as a manorial site according to Hasted, volume VIII.
