Description

Appledore Railway Station was built in 1851 by William Tress for the South Eastern Railway. The station is constructed of red brick with white gault brick and stucco dressings, covered by Welsh slate roofs. It is a two-storey building with single-storey wings at each gable end.

The yard elevation has three bays, with the central bay projecting forward under a gable. It features full-height quoin pilasters in white brick. The ground floor has arched windows in each bay; the centre one is blocked and includes a Victorian wall letterbox. A door is located in the left return, with an arched head, keystone, and part-glazed double doors, while a blocked window is present in the right return. A cill band runs along the first floor. Square-headed windows with marginal glazing are above the ground-floor openings, with paired windows in the center. There are three tall stacks on a hipped roof. Small gabled wings at either end are likely original, and the end elevations are blind.

The platform elevation presents a slightly projecting central bay with an arched doorway and fanlight, flanked by blocked arched windows. Above, three square-headed windows with marginal glazing and stucco surrounds are visible. Pilasters, a band, and a gable mirror the details of the yard elevation. Windows are present in the wings.

The interior of the building was boarded up at the time of a February 2001 survey.

Appledore station opened in 1851 on the Hastings and Ashford line of the South Eastern Railway. It was originally a single-track line with single-sided stations and was later doubled. It became a junction with the line to Dungeness in 1881 and has been singled again since 1979. The original building remains almost unaltered.
