Description
The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a Grade I listed building located on the east side of The Street in Appledore. The church features a chancel with north and south chapels, a nave with a south aisle, a south porch, and a west tower that is divided into three stages and topped with a crenellated parapet. The north chapel, which now serves as the vestry, and the tower date back to the 13th century. The rest of the church was rebuilt after it was burned by the French in 1380, with the north aisle being incorporated into the nave. The nave consists of four bays and includes four crown posts on tie-beams with pierced spandrels. Notable interior features include a piscina, an aumbry, and a stoup, along with a Perpendicular font. The churchyard contains several 18th-century headstones featuring skull or cherub motifs, as well as some oval bodystones and chest tombs.
