Description
Nine Chimneys, also known as Laurenden Forstal, is a manor house dating from the 17th century, with a 19th-century wing. The building features a timber frame clad in red brick and tile hanging, topped with a plain tile roof. It has two projecting wings, the left one being entirely from the 19th century. Both wings are two storeys high, with brick on the ground floor and a jettied first floor supported on consoles, which is tile hung. The roof has three hips facing the facade, with two large stacks of four diagonal chimneys on the left and five on the right. The windows are irregularly arranged and include 19th and 20th-century leaded casements, along with a shallow bay on the ground floor of the right wing. The entrance features a central open 'half-timbered' porch. Inside, the original 17th-century L-shaped building is largely intact, showcasing a staircase from around 1630, which is a dog-leg design with a half-landing and balustrade. There is also a large wooden fireplace mantel with a high relief carving of a bunch of grapes. The roof structure includes entrenched purlins. The property is marked on the map as Laurenden Forstal, reflecting its historical manorial name.
