Description

The building at 138 and 140 High Street dates from the early 19th century and is a pair of properties. They are red brick with tiled roofs and bracket eaves cornices. Each property has two sashes and one dormer window; the glazing bars are missing from these windows. Number 138 features two bay windows on the ground floor and a doorcase with a low, rectangular fanlight. The door itself is six-panelled, with the top two panels cut away and glazed, and is sheltered by a flat hood. The western half of the building is a large, two-storey house of red brick with a tiled roof and one hipped dormer. It has two double sashes on the first floor and two bays on the ground floor. The side elevation of number 138 is tile-hung. The building is given Group Value, meaning its significance lies in how it contributes to the character of the surrounding area, particularly when viewed alongside numbers 2 and 4/6 West Cross.
