Description
The Former St Theresa's School, built in 1852 and designed by architect William Tress, is a former school located in Newtown. The building is constructed of stone rubble with ashlar dressings, and it features later wings on the southwest made of lighter stone. The roofs are tiled, with both plain and shaped tile bands alternating, and there is a Gothic ashlar stack on the north wing.
The structure comprises three wings with gable fronts facing northeast, with the south wing set back. The south and north wings have slightly later 19th-century southwest extensions, as well as a short additional slightly later northwest wing. The windows include single-light, two-light, and three-light designs, mostly with trefoil and lancet heads; the original windows feature iron lattice tracery.
On the three northeast gable fronts, the south side has two paired lancets with iron tracery and crowning quatrefoils, while the center gable front includes a short two-light trefoiliated window and a tall triple lancet. There is a projecting porch, and the north gable front has three lancets along with a tall gabled bellcote on the verge of the north pitch, featuring a gabled porch in the side return.
Inside, there are 19th-century crown post roofs, and the original southwest end wall of the south wing has two tall lancets with iron lattice tracery. The southwesternmost rear wing has suffered fire damage.
