Description
Lark Hill Farm is a timber-framed farmhouse, originally dating back to the 17th century, with a later 19th-century range added to the east. The earlier part of the building has a traditional lobby-entrance plan, featuring a large central chimney stack and rooms to the north and south. The south roof is hipped, while the north roof is half-hipped. The 19th-century range consists of three hipped roofs arranged at right angles to the original roofline.
The building is two storeys high and four bays wide. The front, south-facing windows are timber-mullioned casements, with those on the ground floor having segmentally arched heads. Other windows are generally timber casements or six-over-six sliding sash windows.
The interior retains much of the original timber frame, including an original rear wall incorporated into the interior, resting on a ragstone rubble plinth. A staircase remains in its original location to the east of the chimney stack, though the well has been boarded over. In the ground floor room south of the stack, a chamfered spine beam with ogee stops, chamfered and stopped ceiling joists, and a large inglenook fireplace with a timber lintel are visible. Two flights of stairs, both 19th-century additions, are now in use, one at the north end and the other within the later phase to the south. Original features include timber mullions in internalised windows, plank doors, and a timber window shutter. The building was the subject of a sensitive repair and alteration program in the early 21st century, which led to the recreation of some previously lost elements.
A 19th-century bake house is located to the rear of the farmhouse and contains a copper for boiling water and a pair of bread ovens.
