Description

Bittles Farmhouse is a late medieval timber-framed hall house, significantly altered around 1600, with early 19th-century service wings and 20th-century additions. The structure has thick walls of flint with chalkstone backing, brick dressings, a prominent plinth, and chamfered window reveals, several of which are covered in cement. A small area of tile-hanging sits above the brickwork, which is laid in a Flemish bond pattern, and a small section of the original timber frame remains visible. The roof is tiled. The original hall featured a large external fireplace, which was later enclosed when upper floors were inserted and a wing was built above and across one end, creating an L-shaped layout. The house is two and two-and-a-half storeys high with an irregular arrangement of windows. It has 20th-century casement windows and a 20th-century doorway with a canopy supported by brackets. Undistinguished service wings, with a double-pile roof, are located on the south side.
