Description

Nos 30 to 41 on High Street, built in 1833, are a group of mainly 16th-century buildings that have been significantly altered over time. They are three stories high, with upper floors that project over the pavement, supported by columns along the edge. Many of the buildings feature over-sailing gables, bargeboards, and moulded ridge tiles, although the group is no longer uniform due to several houses being rebuilt.

No 30 has three windows with sash frames and glazing bars. No 31 features a gable with old bargeboards. No 32 was rebuilt around 1850 in white brick, also with three windows. Nos 33 and 35 have timber-framed plastered gables and bargeboards from the 16th century, with No 33 having a modern bow window on the first floor. No 34 contains a well-preserved mid-19th-century tobacconist's shop interior. Nos 36 and 37 are late 19th-century rebuilds designed in the Elizabethan style, notable for their decorative features. No 39, also late 19th century, is built of red brick and has three stories. Nos 40 and 41, at the western end of the row, date from the 17th to 18th centuries, are two stories tall, made of plaster, and have hipped roofs. The shop fronts beneath the arcade are modern but have been completely rebuilt in a facsimile style, incorporating remains of the Royal Palace.

The Old Market House, the Butter Cross, and Nos 25 to 50 form a cohesive group with these buildings.
