Description

This is a terrace of six houses located in Hyde Street, Winchester, dating to around 1870. The construction is of flint and red brick, with a clay tile roof featuring gabled ends and brick chimney stacks.

The architectural style is Victorian Tudor Gothic. The front elevation has six bays per pair of houses, displaying sash windows with margin glazing bars. The upper floors have sashes in chamfered brick openings with timber lintels. The ground floor features large sashes in chamfered brick openings with segmental arches. Each pair of houses has Tudor arched doorways made of brick, recessed under a four-centred brick arch, with flush-panelled doors and overlights. The front of the houses incorporates panels of flint, brick window and door frames, a plinth, and corbelled brick string and eaves courses which extend onto the gable ends. Each house has a large dormer with an overhanging, braced gable supported by brackets, tile hanging, and a three-light casement window with glazing bars. The rear elevation has not been inspected.

The interior includes staircases with turned column newels, stick balusters, and moulded handrails. There are simple fireplaces with cast-iron arched fire grates.

Historical records indicate a sale occurred in 1871 from the Theobald family to William Barrow Simonds. The terrace represents a good example of a High Victorian Tudor Gothic style, constructed with flint and brick, and demonstrates experimentation in design seen in smaller terraces of the time, specifically through its unusual paired doorways.
