Description

Hyde Abbey House is a 17th-century house that was largely refaced in the late 18th century. It is a two-storey and attic structure with red brick walls, a modillion cornice, a string between floors, and a hipped roof covered in old tiles. The house has seven windows, which are sash windows with glazing bars. A central doorway is flanked by five dormers in the attic. The doorcase features Tuscan columns supporting an elaborately moulded open pediment with small dentils. Above the door is a radiating and wreathed fanlight. The reveals and soffit of the pediment are panelled. The interior retains some 17th-century panelling and ceilings. The house was a well-known private school in the 18th century, and notable pupils included George Canning and Lord Lyons.
