Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a Grade I listed building located in Knights Enham, Andover. It is a narrow single-cell church with Norman origins, primarily featuring 13th-century elements, along with some 17th-century additions. The church has a tile roof and a shingled bell turret topped with a spire. The external walls are cement rendered, but the stonework of the filled-in two-bay 13th-century arcade, which once led to a south aisle, is exposed. The church also has brick stepped buttresses at the corners, while the vestry is constructed from flint with stone dressings.

The 17th-century porch is timber-framed, resting on a low wall, with rendered cheeks and a gabled front that is clad in recent vertical boarding, featuring a round arched opening. On the north side of the church, there are small 13th-century lancet windows, while the south side has an old double light in a square frame and later wood-framed windows, with the east window being a modern triple lancet.

Inside, the separation between the nave and chancel is marked by the remains of a timber-framed structure, including a rood beam and three arched openings above a recently widened square opening. The surrounding area is plastered, adorned with painted texts on either side of a framed Royal Coat of Arms, and there is an endowment board on the south side. The north wall of the nave features painted panels with the texts of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer. The chancel and the south wall of the nave contain several wall monuments from the 18th and early 19th centuries, along with a small exposure of the arch and column of the former arcade; two hatchments are displayed high on the wall. The west wall includes an 18th-century piscina, and there is a Norman tube font. Old moulded tie-beams extend slightly below the ceiling.
