Description

Brook Cottage is an early 17th-century timber-framed lobby entrance house that was refronted in the late 18th century and refenestrated in the late 20th century. The front of the house is faced in flintwork with red brick quoins, featuring lacing courses on the left side and panels on the right. It has a hipped thatched roof with a red brick chimney-stack, incorporating some 17th-century bricks at its base. The cottage has two storeys and three windows. Large, 20th-century tripartite casement windows, fitted with shutters, are located on the ground floor, and a modern brick and glazed porch provides access. A catslide roof extends to the rear.

The interior retains exposed box framing with a midrail. The dining room features a central spine beam with 2-inch chamfers and a run-out stop at one end, as well as an open fireplace containing the entrance to a bread oven and a salt niche. The lounge, formerly a parlour, has a spine beam with 2 1/2-inch chamfers and lambs tongue and quirk stops, alongside an 18th-century brick fireplace. The roof structure is of the through-purlin type, with a large tie beam, collar beam, and three vertical posts, alongside rustic rafters and some diagonal tension braces. The cottage also has very wide floorboards.
