Description
Testcombe is a house built in 1893, designed in the Arts and Crafts style with influences from Early Tudor architecture. It features a combination of brick, half-timbering, and stone slates, and stands two storeys tall. The west front, which faces the River Test, is a long range with a roofline that is interrupted by a central stack that has an elaborate base and plain diagonal flues. This front includes two gablets above the upper windows and two gabled projections. The upper walls are made of brick-nogged timber framing, while the lower sections have areas of flint and brick, with brick quoins and a plinth.
The projections have upper railed galleries; one features a ground floor with windows and a central half-hexagon French door, while the other is simpler and set back behind wooden corner posts. There are also two shallow brick projections with tiled roofs, one containing a window and the other a French door. The north side presents a complex of gabled projections of varying widths and heights, with two sections being tile-hung and another rendered. The south end includes a tall tower on the east side, with its upper part featuring an exposed frame and roughcast infill. The north end consists of two parts: one is the gable end of the long west front with an upper railed gallery, while the east side has a tiled roof at right angles and a large semi-circular bay. The main entrance, located next to the southeast tower, is adorned with a Jacobean decorative arch and short side pilasters.
