Description
The Longparish War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, designed by T.D. Atkinson of Winchester, and constructed by the North Hants Stone Works of Basingstoke. It was later updated to include names from the Second World War.
The memorial is made from Portland stone and features a cross on a square column, which is mounted on a base with four deep steps that bear commemorative inscriptions. The cross has moulded edging and a central label with ‘IHS’ in moulded lettering. It sits atop a slightly tapering column that has an egg and dart moulded cornice, with a moulded laurel wreath hanging from a ribbon.
On the top step, there is an incised, painted inscription that reads: ‘GREATER LOVE / HATH NO MAN THAN THIS / 1914 – 1918’. Below this, the names of 29 men who died are listed in order of their year of death and surname. On the top step of the return elevation, it states: ‘ERECTED BY THE PARISHIONERS / IN HONOUR OF THE / MEN OF LONGPARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN / THE GREAT WAR.’ The top step of the rear elevation has the inscription: ‘1939-1945 / IN MEMORY / OF’ followed by the names of 11 local men.
