Description
The Church of St Mary is a parish church located in Breamore Park, notable for its Saxon origins dating back to the late 10th century, with minor alterations made during all medieval periods. The church features walls constructed of whole flints with stone dressings, showcasing long and short work, pilaster strips, and quoins. There are seven surviving double-splayed windows, some of which have been modified, along with inserted windows that have one or two cusped lights, and an east window adorned with reticulated tracery from the 14th century. The roof is tiled and has a pyramid shape over the tower, which is topped by a bell turret with a pyramid roof and shingle cladding.
The church has an aisleless nave that is separated from the lower chancel, mainly from the 14th century, by a tower. There is a south side porticus, while the former north porticus has been lost. A south porch provides entrance to the church. Inside, there are 15th-century replacement east and west tower arches, and an original narrow arch leading to the porticus that features an inscription. Additional interior elements include a 15th-century piscina, an octagonal font, a Royal Coat of Arms, several hatchments displayed in the upper part of the tower, and various wall monuments. Traces of wall paintings can also be seen. The 12th-century porch has a later superstructure, and the missing upper floor reveals the Saxon rood, although parts of the relief have been chiselled away. Two benches made from the former steps to the bell chamber are dated 1617.
