Description

Avon Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse that was altered in the 19th century. It is constructed of brick, with some diaperwork detailing, and has plain tile roofs with back gable copings and stacks. The building is L-shaped, forming a corner of a courtyard. The main elevation, which faces the corner of the courtyard, includes a wing of the house on the right-hand side. The gabled, two-storey right-hand bay has a gabled porch with a moulded four-centred doorway, and a two-light window in the gable above, both with dripstones. The central three bays to the left have a four-centred doorway, and a three- or five-light window on either side. Three gabled dormers with two-light windows are above the main bays. The roof has gable walls and a stack to the left-hand end, and a wall to the right-hand gable. Ridge stacks are located to the left of the gabled bay and on the ridge behind it. A link connects the left-hand end wall, which features a window, door, and double doors, to a three-bay coach house. The coach house has a slightly projecting central gable with a wide four-centred archway and double doors. The flanking bays are blank, with central buttresses. There is a gable wall and stack over the right-hand bay stable. On the courtyard side, above the wing, there is a pent-roofed verandah extending across the width. The other wing has a four-centred door to one side of the centre, alongside a casement window with diamond-pane leaded lights. A gable wall and stack are at the end, and a ridge stack is located at the junction of the wings. The interior retains much of its 17th-century layout.
