Description
The Vicarage is a building that has two distinct parts, with the earlier section at the north end dating from the 17th century and the southern portion added in the early 19th century. The facade is finished in white roughcast, while the northern part is likely made of cob. The building features a double span roof, with the northern section covered in tiles and the southern section in slate, both having hipped roofs and wide projecting eaves. A 17th-century chimney is present. The structure has two storeys and one attic dormer, with five windows in total, including two that are blank. The windows are sashes with glazing bars. At the south end, there is a basement with old casements that have diamond-shaped lead quarrels set in arched lights. A trellised wooden porch with a tent-shaped canopy is located at the entrance, which features a doorway with a semi-circular fanlight. Notably, Francis Lyte, the author of "Abide with Me," served as the curate of Lymington for several years when it was part of the Parish of Boldre and is believed to have lived in this house.
