Description
Barnes House is a building dating from around 1630, constructed of red brick with some grey brick. It features a brick plinth and a moulded string course at the height of the first floor. The walls are said to be cavity walls, measuring 18 inches thick. The roof is tiled with coped gable ends that include kneelers. The west gable end has three large diagonal chimney stacks rising from a rectangular plinth, with additional chimneys at the rear. The main facade, facing south, is two storeys high and has five windows, which include two-light and three-light casements with leaded glazing, some of which is likely original. There is a centrally located gabled porch. At the rear, three gothic-style windows have been inserted, along with two-storey outshuts and an original dairy built on a stone foundation, to which a second storey has been added in the same style. Barnes House was originally the Dower House of Newlands Manor.
