Description

The Black Dog Public House is a timber-framed building, largely refronted in the early 19th century, with a rear section that was formerly used as a court, dating back to the 16th century. The building has a brick exterior, with a tile roof. The front facade, facing north, is two storeys and an attic, with four windows. The roof is half-hipped at the east end, where it abuts a large chimney stack, and features brick dentil eaves and two dormers with cambered leaded roofing and sash windows. The brick walling is painted and laid in a Flemish bond, with rubbed flat arches and stone cills. The windows are sash windows in reveals. Two doorcases feature pediments, friezes, and pilasters, and have half-glazed doors. The older rear of the building displays a prominent staircase block with a hipped roof. Later rear extensions incorporate tiled roofs, red brick walling in both Monk and Flemish garden bond patterns, and sash and casement windows. A wrought-iron decorative sign bracket is also present. Boundary walls made of flint with brick dressings run along the roadside.
