Description

This barn, later adapted for stabling with a hayloft, dates to the early 17th and 18th centuries, with modifications made in the mid-19th century. The timber frame is visible at the east and west ends, featuring jowled posts, a midrail, and a curved tension brace at the eastern end. The infill to the frame and the exterior are largely in 18th-century brickwork, using Flemish bond, Sussex bond, and stretcher bond patterns. The cart entrance was replaced with weatherboarding in the first half of the 19th century, during a conversion to stabling. The gabled roof is now clad in 20th-century pantiles. Openings are present in both the west and east gables, including wooden loft openings. The south elevation features a loft opening, a sash window in the former cart entrance, and a stable door. The north gable has a mid-19th century fixed casement window and a wide doorcase with a moulded wooden architrave and plank door. Internally, much of the original early 17th-century wall frame remains. The roof of at least the two western bays was replaced in the mid-19th century, coinciding with the modification of the cart entrance. The barn possesses group value.
