Description
Mattingley Church, originally listed simply as Church, is a Grade I building dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, with alterations made in 1837. The church was originally a two-cell structure, consisting of a chancel with two bays and a nave with five bays. Aisles were added in 1837. The entire building is timber-framed, with closely-spaced vertical timbers enclosing red herring-bone brickwork, which rests on a brick base. It features a red tile roof, and at the west end, there is a bell-turret topped with a pyramid roof, all clad in shingles.
The windows are slender, with round or slightly pointed heads. At the east end, there is a group of five 16th-century windows, while the aisles have groups of four, and other windows are coupled. A modern timber porch matches the style of the church. Inside, the arch-braced roof is supported by timber columns that were part of the original framework. Notable interior features include an old font, an altar cloth from 1667 that is framed and glazed and attached to the wall, and 17th-century panelling in the eastern bay of the chancel.
