Description
The Nest is a cottage dating from the 18th century, with alterations made in the 19th century and 1991. It is timber-framed and rendered, with a front elevation of red brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, featuring glazed headers. The roof is covered in plain tiles, with a half-hipped north end, and has external brick stacks at each end. The cottage originally comprised two cells, with an entrance off-centre and a large external stack. It has a catslide roof to the rear, extending over an outshut which was rebuilt in red brick in 1991.
The main elevation is characterised by two windows on the ground floor and three above, all with 19th-century casement windows, the ground floor windows set within cambered brick arches. A gabled brick porch was added in 1991 to the right of the centre. The timber frame is exposed in both gable ends, and a small external stack is present on the left, likely a 19th-century addition. A glazed bay window links the cottage to a 1991 extension on the left.
Inside, the rear wall retains square-panelled timber framing with arched head and foot braces. Original features include an original partition wall on the first floor, original cross-beams and joists on the ground floor (with 1991 additions), and the original roof structure, which incorporates a re-used cambered tie-beam and paired rafters, although the ridge-piece has been replaced.
