Description
The boundary railings and gates located approximately 30 meters to the west of the Guard House at St George's Barracks were constructed around 1858. They are made of cast iron and feature stone kerbs. The railings are spear-headed and supported by bracketed standards. The gates are well-crafted, with iron piers formed from connected rings that curve over to support an overhead lamp, and they consist of double gates. These decorative railings extend westward from the former Guard House, marking the southern entrance to the northern section of the former infantry barracks. This design is notable as one of the first barracks to adopt a more open layout, following the example set by Aldershot, using boundary railings instead of a high wall to highlight the barracks' function as a transit station rather than a facility for civil order.
