Description
Boundary railings extend approximately 400 meters to the north and east sides of St George's Barracks in Gosport. These railings date from the 1860s and are made of cast iron with stone kerbs. They feature spear-headed designs with bracketed standards and include well-crafted gates with iron piers formed from connected rings that curve over to an overhead lamp. The double gates are part of a decorative scheme that encloses the southern section of the former infantry barracks. This design is notable as one of the first barracks to adopt a more open layout following the model established at Aldershot, using railings instead of a high wall, which highlights the barracks' function as a transit station rather than a facility for maintaining civil order.
