Description

The lychgate to the west of Holy Rood Church in Alton was built in 1899 and is designed in the Perpendicular style. It features an openwork timber frame structure set on a low plinth wall made of rubble and ashlar, topped with a tiled roof. The lychgate consists of two bays and includes decorative tie beams that support a queen post arcade with arched infill panels beneath the collar. The gables are adorned with scalloped bargeboards and pendants. There are wooden double gates on the roadside, fitted with pintle hinges. An inscription on the tie beam commemorates Elizabeth Bradly Howard and notes that it was erected by her sister, Edith E. B. Judge, in 1899. This lychgate remains an unaltered 19th-century memorial structure associated with the listed church.
