Description

Shrubbery Cottage and Shrubbery House is a large building located on Main Road in Upper Froyle. It dates from the 18th century, with extensions added around 1900. The structure features brick walls and a tiled roof, positioned at right angles to the roadway. The original part of the building is L-shaped, with the north wing facing the road, while larger Edwardian additions extend to the southeast and rear.

The front elevation is two storeys high and includes two octagonal two-storey bays and a window arrangement of 3.1.3.1, with the taller extension projecting forward and featuring a rectangular bay of 3.1 windows. The roof is hipped with a small slate section. The walls are constructed in Flemish bond and include a parapet with coping, rubbed flat arches, and a plinth at the bays and extension. The windows are sashes set in reveals.

At the junction of the original and newer parts of the building, there is an Edwardian semi-circular porch with a parapet that is raised in the centre above a niche containing a statue of a saint. The porch also features an entablature, narrow flanking sash windows, pilasters, a fanlight, and a six-panelled door. The roadside elevation is two storeys with an attic, displaying three windows above five. It has a tiled roof, brick dentil eaves, and two flat-roofed dormers. The walls are painted in Flemish bond with cambered openings on the ground floor, and there are oak casements and a plain doorway.

The rear of the building is a complex of projecting units from around 1900, featuring gables, tile-hanging, painted brick, rendered walls, and vernacular architectural details.
