Description

Lower Neatham Mill is a house, originally a watermill, dating to the 18th century with additions from the mid-19th century. The building is constructed of brick, some with distinct bonding patterns, and has a slate roof. The structure consists of two phases, joined at a slight angle. The north side, dating back to the 18th century, is a low two-story building with a low-pitched, hipped slate roof. The east-facing front wall is of red brick in a header bond, featuring an arcade of six openings with oval arches, stone keys, and impost bands. Two of the northernmost arches are filled with stonework, the westernmost is plastered, and above is a half-dormer loft doorway with windows on either side. The north elevation is of malmstone with brick dressings, and includes a central doorway with flanking lunettes and a 20th-century window above the door. The south side is a taller three-story and attic block, four bays wide. The southernmost bay and the ground floor are of painted brick in English bond with cambered openings, while the remaining walling is vertical boarding. The northernmost bay has an oversailing gabled hoist above doorways at the first and second floors. A roadway passes in front of this elevation, with a bridge spanning the waterway above the second bay. The rear of this block overlooks the mill race, displaying brickwork with some original small openings and larger 20th-century openings, with casements.
