Description
The Lower School of Amery Hill School, formerly Eggar's Grammar School, dates to the 17th century, founded in 1642 by John Eggar, whose initials appear in iron on the left-hand gable. It is a two-storey building with an attic, and three bays wide. The building is constructed of red brick with a tiled roof and a central stack containing four chimneys. The front elevation has a central ledged oak door with an original knocker in a heavy moulded oak frame, set within a later porch. This is flanked by two five-light mullioned and transomed casement windows on either side at ground floor level. A moulded band runs along the 1st floor. Above, the first floor has a central three-light mullioned casement window, with two five-light mullioned and transomed casement windows on either side. Each gable contains a single three-light mullioned attic window, with a small former window positioned between the two gables. A plain band runs below the gables, and extends over the windows to form a drip mould. A largely 18th-century addition is located at the rear. A modern addition, designed to mimic the 17th-century style, forms the left-hand part of the building.
