Description

Manor Cottages is a terrace of estate cottages built in 1939 by E.T. Mort for Lord Portal. The cottages feature stretcher-bond red brick on the ground floor, with weatherboarding above and timber-framing in the gables. They have a thatched roof with half-hipped ends, while the rear pitch of the roof is tiled. Red brick axial stacks have weathered brick bases and caps.

The structure is a long range of about 18 estate cottages designed in a picturesque Domestic Revival style. It is one storey with an attic and has a symmetrical south front with a 7-bay center flanked by two wide half-hipped timber-framed gables. A colonnade between the gables features pairs of circular brick columns. The outer gables are the projecting ends of flanking ranges that face outwards in a butterfly plan. Each section has through-passages at the center, with the middle passage featuring a moulded stone Tudor arch and an armorial tablet above. Oculi with shouldered arches and cills are located to the left and right. The windows are metal-frame casements with leaded panes, and the corner windows have moulded corner-posts. The attic windows are dormers, except for those in the gables.

In front of the cottages, there are three wells with thatched roofs; the center well has a conical roof. Notably, from 1942, Lord Portal served as Minister for Works and Buildings and introduced prefabricated houses, which became known as 'Portal houses'.
