Description

These are a symmetrical pair of late 18th and early 19th century cottages with a later extension to the north. The facade, facing north-west, is two storeys high and has one or two windows. The roof is slate-covered, and the walls are flint with brick dressings. Details include quoins, vertical bands, vertical panels framing the windows (originally cambered to No. 7, later larger and square to No. 6), bands along the eaves and plinth, all of which are now colourwashed. The windows are casements in No. 7 and sashes in No. 6, with a wide, angular bay at the north side. Boarded doors are set in solid frames beneath hoods, with arch-braced gables on curved brackets. The southwest gable has an attic window and a wall divided by two vertical flint panels. There's a central, ground-floor angular bay with a tiled roof. A modern extension is located along the rear. Above the doorway of No. 6 is a moulded rectangular plaque with an oval inset, inscribed with the words “The Little White Tenement next the Mill Built by Mr Joseph Portal as a residence for the Bank Officer 1785.”
