Description
The Stable Block and Tower, along with part of the Kitchen Garden Wall, are remains of Malshanger Castle, dating from the 16th century, early 19th century, and mid-19th century. This connected structure features a long, narrow block that serves as both stable and service wing, consisting of one storey and an attic added later. The center of the block has a gable with an upper window above a filled 'Tudor' carriageway arch, flanked by windows and doors. The roof is tiled, with gabled dormers that have cills at eaves level. At the east end of the block stands a tall octagonal staircase tower, part of a gateway, which is the main surviving feature of a house built by Archbishop Warham in the early 16th century. The tower is constructed of red brick in English bond, topped with crenellations and a moulded stone coping. It has a blocked doorway at mid-height and a plain doorway with a 4-centred arch at the ground floor. At the west end of the block, there is a square 'gazebo' featuring an upper bay window on brackets from the early 19th century, with diagonal metal casements. The south and north faces of the main block are adorned with flint panels. To the north of the west end, there is a high garden wall made of red brick, with the lower section dating back to the 16th century.
