Description

Jonathan's Thatch is a cottage dating from the early 17th century, which was remodeled in the early 19th century and extended in the late 20th century. It features a timber frame with red brick nogging, some of which has been rebuilt in Flemish bond red brick. The cottage has a thatched roof with gabled ends and a projecting gable end stack that includes rendered set-offs and a barrel-shaped oven at its base, topped with a tile roof.

The plan consists of two rooms, with the left-hand (south) room extended in the early 19th century to accommodate a new stack and oven. In the late 20th century, a wing was added to the right (north) end, projecting at the rear.

The exterior is one storey with an attic and presents an asymmetrical two-window east front, along with a one-window range of 20th-century brick extension on the right. The left side of the front and the end wall have been rebuilt in brick. The right side features a 20th-century three-light casement window with glazing bars and a French casement. There are two gabled dormers, each with two-light casements and glazing bars. At the rear, the right side has a timber frame wall, while the left side has a large 20th-century brick wing with a porch at the angle.

Inside, the left-hand (south) room has a chamfered axial beam with hollow-step stops, and the left end is supported on former mid-rail with redundant mortices on console brackets, one of which has guilloche pattern carving. There is a 19th-century brick fireplace with a cambered brick arch and an oven. The smaller right-hand (north) room features closely spaced unchamfered axial joists, with the right ends supported on blocks on a chamfered half-beam that has a hollow-step stop at one end. The wall framing shows exposed tension braces, and the attic contains a two-bay clasped-purlin roof with exposed wind braces, although the apex of the roof is not accessible.
