Description
The Doves Nest, built in 1904 by M H Baillie Scott, was originally named Bregnehueset and is thought to have been constructed for the Simmons family. This two-storey building features a symmetrical plan, is rendered with a tiled roof, and has casement windows. The street-facing side showcases three gables that are visually connected by an outcurving corner, which also serves as a buttress and supports the diagonally placed roof above the entrance porch. The garden elevation consists of four bays with two projecting gabled wings that enclose a curved sun terrace. Additionally, there is a conical-shaped projection at the ground floor that houses a sitting room window seat and a doorcase topped with a curved pediment, which features a glass and enamelled high relief attributed to Burne Jones.
Inside, the property includes a lounge hall with three-quarter panelling and inlaid work around the fireplace, a drawing room with a copper hooded fireplace flanked by inglenook seats, bookcases, and stained glass windows. The dining room also has three-quarter wooden panelling and a fireplace with a copper hood. The principal bedroom features a barred vaulted ceiling and a 15-foot wide inglenook with benches, cabinets, and bookcases.
