Description

Temple Grove Preparatory School, originally called Heron’s Ghyll, is a house dating back to around 1850. It was constructed in a Tudor Gothic style. The original building is stone, with a tiled roof and gabled dormers. The windows are casement windows with stone mullions and transoms. A two-storey porch forms part of the design. The poet Coventry Patmore occupied the house and made additions between 1866 and 1867, designed by J F Bentley and executed in matching style and materials. On the garden front, there are two gabled, two-storeyed bays with mullioned and transomed windows on the ground floor and mullioned windows on the first floor, with a shield positioned between the bays on the first floor and a gabled dormer above. To the right of this block is a slightly larger block with a central gable. The interior features a staircase in a Jacobean style.
