Description

Old Nether is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It is believed to date from 1432 and is certainly a timber-framed building from the 17th century or earlier, which was refronted in the 19th century, as indicated by a brick over the front door dated 1853. The building features a painted brick facade, render, weatherboarding, and a hipped tiled roof with one central brick chimneystack and a former external chimneystack on the right side. It has two storeys and attics, with a plan that appears to be a three-bay lobby entrance house.

The front elevation showcases painted brick in Flemish bond with three irregularly spaced 20th-century wooden casement windows that have leaded lights. The right side elevation is rendered, while the left side has a weatherboarded lean-to extension. The rear elevation features a catslide roof with a gabled dormer, an outshot, and a gabled left side projection that reveals timber framing.

Inside, the sitting room includes an open fireplace with a wooden bressumer and a brick hearth, along with a spine beam and exposed floor joists. The dining room also displays exposed beams. The original external wall is visible from the outshot and is timber-framed with box framing and wattle and daub panels. The outshot features an angled queen strut and exposed rafters, likely from the 18th century. The staircase has a winder or half-winder shape, which may be of interest. The first-floor bedrooms are noted for their exposed beams on both ceilings and walls. Overall, Old Nether is a 17th-century or earlier timber-framed house, likely of the lobby entrance type, that has been refronted in brickwork.
