Description

Laurel Bank Terrace is a row of cottages located on Lower High Street, Wadhurst. A timber-framed building likely dating back to the 16th century or earlier was re-roofed and refronted in the 18th century and refenestrated in the 19th century. The cottages are rendered and have a tiled roof with a large central brick chimneystack and two further chimneystacks. They are two storeys high, with attic space accessed by three hipped dormers, each containing a casement window. There are six 19th-century casement windows. A flat band runs around the building, with an exception at number 3. Numbers 3 and 5 have plank doors, while the others have 20th-century replacements.

The rear elevation is rendered to the ground floor of numbers 2 and 3, with tile hanging to the first floor. Numbers 4 and 5 are weatherboarded.

A possible unadorned spire truss, possibly dating from around 1350, may be visible within number 3, along with a late 16th or early 17th century open fireplace featuring a wooden bressumer with run-out stops and sandstone sides. This fireplace also includes a spine beam with lambs tongue stops. Gunstock jowled posts are present on the upper floor. The roof, altered in the 18th century, incorporates through purlins, a collar beam, and an inserted ridge piece.

Number 2 retains a late 16th century spine-beam on the first floor, and an 18th century open fireplace and spine beam with run-out stops on the ground floor. A 18th century spine beam is also found in number 4, although the original bakeoven beside the central chimney-stack has been removed. Number 5 retains 16th century beams.
