Description
Mayfield War Memorial is located between buildings on the north side of the High Street, aligned with the south porch of the Grade I-listed parish Church of St Dunstan. The memorial features a cross botonée that rises from the moulded collar of a tall, tapering octagonal shaft. The foot of the cross shaft is splayed and stands on a corniced plinth, which is also octagonal in shape. This plinth is elevated on three octagonal steps.
On the front face of the plinth, there is a crenellated bronze plaque that displays the main dedicatory inscription. This inscription, placed beneath a wreath, reads: "IN EVER-GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF MAYFIELD WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR KING AND COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. IN THE MORNING WE WILL REMEMBER AND AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN WE WILL NOT FORGET." The names of those commemorated are incised into the stone on the other faces of the plinth, below small bronze wreaths affixed to the top of each face. Additionally, a bronze plaque has been added to the base, which states: "AND OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945," with names inscribed on the adjacent faces.
The cross is surrounded by a pavement of crazy paving, with rubble stone retaining walls on three sides.
