Thornes

Thornes is a house, probably from the 17th century, with later cladding. It features a timber frame that is clad in brick on the ground floor and tile-hung above, topped with a half-hipped tile roof. The building has three bays and is two stories tall with a lobby entry. The front facing the lane has small lattice-pane casements, a board front door with glazed panels, and brickwork that shows various dates with straight joints corresponding to the bays. The first floor is bricked only in the first bay, and there is one chimney. The left gable end is entirely tile-hung. At the rear, there is a glazed porch with an extension above in the same style, along with a small pantry under a catslide roof. Inside, there is a simple chimney breast between the last two bays, featuring a heavy bressumer in the main room. The axial beam has shield stops, but the main cross beam is unmoulded and previously had a stud partition. Most of the main timbers are visible upstairs, including corner posts, with two studs per bay evident from peg-holes, and some still surviving. One middle rail remains at the rear of the first bay.
