Description

The war memorial in the churchyard of St Margaret the Queen commemorates those who served in World War I and World War II. Its designer is unknown. The memorial is made of stone and features an elaborate lantern cross. The square shaft tapers upwards from a square plinth, which sits on a two-tier base with square blocks at each corner. The lantern appears to rest on the heads of two figures, possibly angels, positioned on either side of the shaft, each holding a shield against its chest. The lantern's two faces depict Christ with two children and St George slaying the dragon, both surrounded by delicate decorative carvings. At the top of the shaft, above the lantern, is a small winged beast. The names of the fallen are inscribed on each side of the plinth.

War memorials are significant for their historical and cultural importance at both local and national levels. This memorial is notable for its unusual design and the skillful execution of its detailed carvings. It is prominently located in the churchyard and has group value with the Grade I listed Church of St Margaret the Queen, which is situated within the Grade II* registered Buxted Park.
