Description

BUXTED

995/0/10107 BUXTED PARK 23-FEB-07 War Memorial, Churchyard of St Margaret the Queen

GV II War memorial for World War I and World War II; designer unknown. The memorial is carved in stone, and takes the form of an elaborate lantern cross, the square tapering shaft of which rises from a square plinth resting on a two tier base with square blocks at each corner. The lantern appears to rest on the heads of two figures placed opposite each other on either side of the shaft, possibly angels, each of which holds a shield against its chest. The two faces of the lantern depict, respectively, Christ with two children, and St George slaying the dragon; above both of these is delicate decorative carving. At the top of the shaft, above the lantern, is a small winged beast. Each side of the plinth carries names of the fallen.

SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE War memorials qualify for listing because of their strong historical and cultural significance in both a local and a national context. This is a war memorial of unusual design, with detailed carvings delicately and skillfully executed. Prominently placed in the churchyard, it has group value with the Grade I listed Church of St Margaret the Queen, which in turn lies within the Grade II* registered Buxted Park.
