Description

Buxted Park is a house originally built by Thomas Medley around 1722 and altered in 1810. It was gutted by fire in 1940 and rebuilt without the second storey between 1940 and 1947, incorporating many features from contemporary but demolished London houses. The second storey was later rebuilt, and a large wing was added to the north-east. The main front faces south and has three storeys with nine windows. The building is made of red brick, with the ground floor stuccoed and rusticated, featuring long and short stone quoins, a stone cornice, a blocking course, and window surroundings. The glazing bars are intact. The central portion, which has five window bays, projects and includes a portico supported by six Doric columns. The east front has seven windows and features a similar portico with four columns, added in 1810 to replace a recessed centre. The main entrance was relocated to the west by Basil Ionides and features a verniculated Ionic doorway brought from West Harling Hall in Norfolk. The interior boasts many fine 18th-century features sourced from contemporary but demolished houses in London, with the most notable being the staircase from No 30 Old Burlington Street. Lord Liverpool, who served as Prime Minister from 1812 to 1827, lived here.
