Description

The war memorial is located in the churchyard of the Church of All Saints in Whitstable, close to the west end of the church and the Wynn Ellis Mausoleum. It was erected after the First World War, commemorating those who died in the conflict of 1914-1918. The memorial takes the form of a tall lantern cross constructed from Portland stone. The ornate lantern head features a Latin cross with a figure of Christ crucified, rising above a domed, octagonal lantern. The lantern has been pierced on four sides to allow a light to be lit within the enclosed chamber. The four remaining sides of the lantern are decorated with carved shields bearing the IHS monogram. The lantern sits atop a tapering octagonal shaft, which in turn rests on a square pedestal featuring scotia moulding. Carved in low relief on the front face of the pedestal are the Royal Arms. The pedestal stands on a three-stepped base; the lower step has a slight overhang intended for floral tributes. The dedicatory inscription, reading PEACE/ TO THE UNCONQUERED/ 1914 – 1918, is carved into the front faces of the two upper steps.
