Description

Old Giffords Farmhouse is a house that was formerly the crosswing of a larger mansion, of which this is the remaining part. It dates from the early 17th century, with minor alterations made in the late 17th or early 18th century, and it was refronted in the late 18th century when a bakehouse was added to the western end of the north elevation. The building is constructed of ashlar and features a half-hipped tiled roof with end gables. At the rear, there is a 17th-century external chimneystack with two diagonally set stacks, and the late 18th-century bakehouse is made of red brick.

The house has two storeys, with the front elevation showcasing three dormers, four small casements on the first floor, and two large cambered casements on the ground floor, all featuring small square leaded panes. There is a deep plinth, and the right side elevation includes two cambered casements and a cambered doorcase. Other elevations retain five early 17th-century chamfered mullioned windows. The attached late 18th-century bakehouse at the rear is built in English bond and has casement windows.

Inside, the farmhouse retains a wide fireplace with a timber lintel in the kitchen, which shows the mark of a former spit mechanism. The late 18th-century roof consists of seven bays with staggered butt purlin construction and a contemporary ridgeboard. The house was assessed in the 1662 Hearth Tax Returns at seven flues, although only one remains today.
