Description
The Ticehurst War Memorial is a stone memorial dedicated to the First World War, built in 1921, with an adjacent commemorative stone for the Second World War from 1947. It is made of Devonshire granite and is situated in a triangular grassed area at the center of Ticehurst village square.
The memorial features a tall, rough-hewn Celtic cross with a carved knot at the top, standing on a three-stepped octagonal base. The base is inscribed with the words 'LEST WE FORGET OUR GLORIOUS DEAD 1914 – 1918'.
On the eastern edge of the grassed area, there is a separate segmental-headed stone of remembrance. This stone has a rough-hewn surround, and its polished face is inscribed with the words 'IN PROUD / THANKSGIVING / 1939 – 1945'.
The memorial is enclosed by a set of later 20th-century metal railings, which are not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
