Description
The Landgate is a historic structure dating back to 1340 for the lower two storeys and 1380 for the top storey. It features a gate flanked by two round towers, all built from stone rubble and resting on moulded plinths. The original parapet is no longer present, but the string course and machiolations with moulded corbels can still be seen on the north front. This side includes a pointed arch with grooves for a portcullis, while the south front has an elliptical arch supported by buttresses, one of which has been removed. Inside the reveals of the inner arch are pointed doorways that provide access to the side towers. The towers also have rectangular loop windows with ashlar dressings, and trefoil-headed lancets are located above the gate. The floors and roof of the gate and towers have been lost over time. A tile clock was added in 1862. The south side of The Landgate, along with Nos 1 and 2, forms a group with Nos 1 to 4 (consecutive) The Forge and Forge House on East Cliff.
