Description
Battle Abbey School is a mansion built in 1857 by the Webster family, designed by architect Henry Clutton. The building incorporates parts of the medieval Abbey, specifically the west wall of the cloisters and sections of the frater and the Abbot's lodgings, which date from the 13th and 14th centuries. These medieval elements are visible on the east side of the building.
On the ground floor, there are nine pointed arches in early Perpendicular style, with tracery that has been filled in, representing the west wall of the cloisters. At the south end, there is a taller medieval section. The rest of the structure is from 1857 and features three storeys with a modern attic. In total, there are thirteen windows and four dormers. The building is constructed of stone rubble, with part of the upper storeys rendered, and has a castellated parapet and a modern tiled roof. The casement windows and two stepped gables above the cloister arches contribute to its distinctive appearance. The west front is primarily from the 19th century.
